Dambatenne Tea Factory

The tea leaves produced by the hills of Sri Lanka are celebrated around the world. Visiting Dambatenne Tea factory is bound to be an enjoyable and insightful visit. Built in 1890 by the famous Scottish tea baron, Sir Thomas Lipton – the factory is located a few kilometres outside of Haputale, approximately 30 mins away from Dutch House Bandarawela.
The factory carries out a ‘Tea Tour’ in which they demonstrate the entire procedure and techniques of tea making – from fermentation, rolling, drying, cutting, sieving to the grading of the tea. The tour lasts less than 30-minutes. For the avid tea drinkers, here’s a chance to see exactly what processes tea leaves go through before they find their way to your tea cup.
Getting to the tea factory is an adventure of its own, as the tea factory is a sparse hilly region – however, the comprehensive tea tour and refreshing cup of tea at the very end are surely worth it.
