THE DUTCH HOUSE - BANDARAWELA

A BOUTIQUE VILLA IN THE TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD

The Dutch House is run by Rodney Arnoldi and Eric Gunawardena. After retiring from the antique furniture trade (1972-2005) and closing their business premises in London and Richmond-upon-Thames. England, they decided to make Sri Lanka their new home. The comfortable climate of Bandarawela seemed to be the ideal location, so they set about  building an old style colonial house (Sagala) using antique windows, doors and verandah columns. The two-acre plot high up in the hills also seemed the ideal place to build a house for travellers looking for a peaceful and private environment.

The Cape-Dutch design they chose to build came from the idea that if the Dutch settlers who once occupied Ceylon during the 17th & 18th centuries, had moved to the Hill Country instead of settling in the coastal areas, they may well have designed their houses as they did in the Cape of South Africa.

Their interest in antiques and interior design will be obvious when you visit the house.
